FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between an LSV (low-speed vehicle) and a golf cart?
An LSV is its own class of street-legal alternative fuel (electric) vehicle with safety equipment and speed capabilities specified by the Federal Highway Administration. In each State, LSVs are regulated by the Department of Motor Vehicles, unlike golf carts, and have a speed range from 20 to 25 mph. LSVs are street-legal (after insuring and tagging) on streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. LSVs come with many body styles, including some that resemble golf carts, but that doesn’t make them a golf cart. Golf carts do not have the above safety features, speed capabilities, or licensing requirements.

How do the tax credits work?
The tax credits are exactly that—CREDIT towards your income tax liability. If you have state income tax liability that is at least the amount of the credit (50% of your purchase price) then you can REDUCE your liability by that amount, or if you’ve already paid in those taxes, you will get that much in a REFUND. Same thing applies to the federal tax credit of 10%.
Is the tax credit available to me if I live and pay taxes in a different state?
You should check with your state tax commission to see if your state offers a credit. You would, however, be eligible to receive the federal income tax credit, assuming you pay federal income taxes.
My CPA has told me that I am subject to AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax). How will this affect my income tax credits?
For 2011, the federal tax credit on alternative fuel (electric) vehicles was available to offset AMT. As for 2012, we're looking into it.
Is there a limit to the number of low-speed LSVs I may purchase?
